Understanding the Surrender Process

With open hearts and non-judgmental ears, we're here to listen to your story and answer your questions.

We can help guide you through the surrendering process.

We understand that life takes unexpected turns and sometimes that makes it necessary to consider options for your beloved Cavalier companion. The decision to surrender a dog is never an easy one, and during this emotional journey, we're here to offer you guidance, support, and a comforting hand. Our mission is to make this process as understanding and seamless as possible, ensuring that your Cavaliers's well-being and best interests remain at the heart of every step.

If you have reached the decision that you can no longer care for your Cavalier, and surrendering is your only option, and would like to know more about the surrendering process please contact our Rehoming Coordinator on 0458 550 878.

As part of the process we will ask you to complete a surrender form. It’s very important that you tell us everything there is to know about your dog. We do take on dogs with medical or behavioural issues; however we need to be aware of them so we can choose the most appropriate foster home. If you are surrendering more than one dog you will need to complete a surrender form for each dog. We will also organise the transfer of microchips to CKCSRQ.

What happens after a Cavalier has been surrendered?

When a Cavalier is surrendered to CKCSRQ they come into a foster care environment, this is a home environment as we are not a shelter.  We will organise a visit with our vets for a complete health assessment and undertake any vet treatment that may be necessary. If needed, we will also organise a pamper session with our wonderful groomer. We then upload a ‘welcome’ post on our Facebook page and our Instagram page.

Rehoming Process

We undergo a rigorous process as part of rehoming a Cavalier. The process starts with learning as much as we can about each individual dog that comes into our care and this is where our wonderful Foster Carers help with the process. The dogs will usually stay with a Foster Carer for at least 2 to 3 weeks so we can get to know them and what type of environment would make the best new home. Some dogs are happier in a home with another dog while others may be better suited to be an only dog, some prefer children, some do not.

Finding a new home for Cavaliers in our care is done via an application process. Once we feel the dog is ready to be rehomed we will post on our Facebook page and website inviting Expressions of Interest. We thoroughly review all Expression of Interests received and we will speak with potential adopters to find out more about them, their family and their lifestyle. We will also conduct a home inspection to make sure that everything is suitable for the new family member.

We do not keep a waiting list for adoptions and we don’t operate on a ‘first in, best dressed’ system. We take the time to find the best possible match between the dog and the new family. We are confident our process provides the best outcome for the dogs, who, of course, are our number one priority.
